Planning your wedding at Tern Hill Hall? Here’s everything you need to know, from your first enquiry to the final farewell breakfast, so you can enjoy every moment of the journey.
Choosing where to get married is one of the most exciting decisions you’ll ever make. And if you’ve found your way to Tern Hill Hall, you’ve already done something right. Set within 19 acres of beautiful Shropshire countryside near Market Drayton, this exclusive-use country house wedding venue combines timeless elegance with genuinely warm, personal service, whether you’re planning an intimate celebration or a grand affair for up to 240 guests.
But once you’ve fallen in love with the venue, where do you actually start? This step-by-step planning timeline walks you through exactly how a Tern Hill Hall wedding comes together, from the big milestones right down to the day-of details.
12+ Months Before: Book Your Date and Meet Your Coordinator
The earlier you can secure your date at Tern Hill Hall, the better, as popular weekends fill quickly. Your first step is to arrange a private viewing with the wedding team, who aim to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours.
During your viewing, you’ll explore the spaces (the light-filled Orangery, the elegant Dining Room, the sweeping staircase, the beautiful grounds), talk through your vision, and get a feel for the team who will make it all happen. Because every wedding at Tern Hill Hall is unique, pricing is tailored to your date, guest numbers, and the style of day you have in mind, so this initial conversation is the best way to get a clear picture.
Once you’ve confirmed your booking, you’ll be introduced to your dedicated Wedding Coordinator, your single point of contact from planning right through to the last toast on the day itself.
Key tasks at this stage:
- Arrange a venue viewing
- Confirm your date and package
- Meet your Wedding Coordinator
- Start your rough guest list
- Set your overall budget

9–12 Months Before: Lock In Your Key Suppliers
With your venue secured, it’s time to build your supplier team. The most in-demand photographers, florists, and bands can book up well over a year in advance, so this is the time to get organised.
Tern Hill Hall has a curated list of recommended photographers who know the venue well; they’ll already be familiar with the best spots, from the romantic gardens and golden fields at sunset to the iconic staircase and the beautiful Bridal Suite mirror. Your Wedding Coordinator can share this list with you.
You’ll also want to give some early thought to:
- Catering choices: Tern Hill Hall’s in-house team of chefs uses local suppliers and produce wherever possible, and if your guest count is 80 or fewer, you’ll have the flexibility to offer up to three dishes per course
- Civil ceremony or celebrant: your Coordinator will liaise directly with your registrar or celebrant to ensure everything is arranged well in advance (we cannot do this legally- the couple must do this themselves)
- Guest accommodation: Tern Hill Hall has 12 individually designed en-suite bedrooms on-site, available from £160 per night including a full cooked breakfast, ideal for wedding guests who want to stay close to the celebrations
Key tasks at this stage:
- Book your photographer
- Confirm your catering preferences
- Begin registrar or celebrant enquiries
- Circulate save-the-dates
6–9 Months Before: Plan the Finer Details
This is when the vision starts coming to life. Work closely with your Wedding Coordinator to plan the layout and flow of your day, including which spaces you’d like to use for each part of the celebration.
Ceremony spaces: Tern Hill Hall has several rooms licensed for civil ceremonies. The Orangery, with its large bi-folding doors opening straight onto the garden, can seat 40 to 150 guests and is a firm favourite. The Dining Room offers a more intimate setting for up to 50 guests.
Wedding breakfast: Depending on your guest numbers and style of day, you might opt for the Orangery (which can be transformed after your ceremony), the Ballroom for larger parties, or the Dining Room for something more intimate.
Evening reception: The party continues from around 7:00–7:30 pm, with your choice of entertainment, music, and décor setting the tone for the night.
Also start thinking about:
- Flowers, décor, and styling, if you want to set up the day before, Tern Hill Hall can accommodate this from 12pm–5pm, subject to availability (Remove)
- Confetti (natural petals only, used outdoors)
- Transport and taxis, the team always recommends pre-booking taxis, as they can be in high demand at the end of the evening
Key tasks at this stage:
- Finalise room layout and ceremony space
- Confirm your menu and do a tasting
- Book entertainment and evening DJ or band
- Begin thinking about décor and flowers
- Send formal invitations

3–6 Months Before: Confirm Numbers and Finalise the Schedule
By now your guest list should be taking its final shape. Confirm your final numbers (We ask for final numbers by 1 month before) with Tern Hill Hall so catering, seating plans, and room configurations can be prepared precisely.
Work with your Coordinator to map out the day-of timeline in detail. A typical Tern Hill Hall wedding day flows like this:
| Time | What’s Happening |
| 11:30am | Bridal Suite available, relax, get ready, enjoy something sparkling |
| 1:00pm | Ceremony begins |
| ~1:45–2:00pm | Drinks reception in the grounds or dining room |
| ~4:00–4:30pm | Wedding breakfast served (approximately 2.5 hours after the ceremony) |
| After the meal | Speeches and toasts, followed by tea and coffee |
| 7:00–7:30pm | Evening reception begins |
This is also a good time to think about your speeches. Tern Hill Hall’s recommended timing is after the meal, just before tea and coffee, a natural pause in the celebration that gives speakers the room to breathe without interrupting the flow of the day.
Key tasks at this stage:
- Confirm final guest numbers
- Draft your day-of schedule with your Coordinator
- Arrange your seating plan
- Plan wedding morning logistics (hair, makeup, getting-ready team)
The Bridal Suite: Your Wedding Morning at Tern Hill Hall
The Bridal Suite is available from 11:30am, giving the wedding party time to relax and prepare at a comfortable pace. The room is loved by photographers for its abundance of natural light, and your hair and makeup team are very welcome to work there throughout the morning.
If you need recommendations for trusted local hair and makeup professionals, your Wedding Coordinator can point you in the right direction.
The Ceremony: Where It All Begins
From 1:00pm, your ceremony takes centre stage. Whether you’ve chosen the Orangery, the Dining Room, or an outdoor setting, your Coordinator will be working behind the scenes with your registrar or celebrant to ensure everything unfolds exactly as planned.
This is your moment. All you have to do is enjoy it.
The Drinks Reception and Photos
After the vows, guests move through to the drinks reception, in the grounds when the weather allows, or in one of the elegant interior spaces when it doesn’t. This is the window for relaxed mingling, canapés, and those first photos as a married couple.
Tern Hill Hall’s grounds offer no shortage of beautiful backdrops: the romantic garden, the sweeping lawns, the classic country house facade, and the golden fields beyond the boundary at sunset. If your photographer is familiar with the venue, they’ll know exactly where the light falls best at each hour of the day.
The Wedding Breakfast and Speeches
The wedding breakfast is served approximately 2.5 hours after your ceremony, giving guests (and you) the perfect amount of time to catch their breath and enjoy the drinks reception before sitting down together.
The in-house chefs at Tern Hill Hall take real pride in their food, drawing on local Shropshire produce and a carefully developed menu. With guests of 80 or fewer, you’ll have even greater flexibility in what you offer across each course.
Speeches follow the meal, naturally woven into the pause for tea and coffee. Many couples find this the most moving and memorable part of the day, a quiet moment of laughter, gratitude, and reflection before the evening begins.
The Evening Reception
By 7:00–7:30pm, the mood shifts and the celebrations take on a new energy. Your evening reception is yours to shape, a live band, a DJ, a first dance, a late-night buffet, or simply more of the people you love gathered under one roof.
And if you don’t want the day to end? Tern Hill Hall offers accommodation for up to 28 overnight guests, so the celebration can continue into the next morning, including a full cooked breakfast for all overnight guests.
After the Day: The Farewell Breakfast
One of the quieter pleasures of a Tern Hill Hall wedding is the morning after. With 12 on-site en-suite bedrooms, close family and friends can stay the night and gather for a relaxed cooked breakfast, a lovely, unhurried moment before real life resumes.
Check-in from 2pm, check-out by 10am, and a breakfast is included for every overnight guest. Simple, warm, and exactly right.
Why Tern Hill Hall?
Planning a wedding is a big undertaking, but it doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. What sets Tern Hill Hall apart, beyond the beautiful setting, is the personal, hands-on approach of its family-run team.
Your Wedding Coordinator is with you from the first enquiry to the final toast. The venue is exclusively yours on the day, meaning every guest in the building is someone you’ve personally invited. And the ethos is simple: focus on what really matters, the food, the drink, the people you love, and let the team handle the rest.
As one couple put it: “We really can’t thank you enough for everything you did to make our day so special. We didn’t have to worry about a single thing.”
